Camogie is the women's version of hurling. The game is played in a field between two teams of 15 players but until recently it was a 12-a-side game played on a shorter and narrower playing area Recent changes mean it is now played on a pitch exactly the same as that used by the men.

The same stick and ball is used and the scoring system is exactly as in hurling.

Players score a point by striking the sliotar over the crossbar of the goal and a goal is scored when the ball is struck under the bar, into the net as in soccer and is worth three points. The sliotar can be struck on the ground or lifted into the hand and struck on the run.

Rough physical contact is not allowed.

Believe it or not ,there was once a rule that you could not block the ball with your skirt ! That was in the days when the women wore long, heavy skirts called hobble skirts. It was almost impossible to run fast in these skirts.

Like hurling ,camogie is coached in schools and in a network of clubs in all counties of Ireland.
