Football Féile a big hit in the West!
Many agreed that this was one of the very best Féiles ever and credit must go to the Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim GAA Associations. Congratulations to O’Donovan Rossa of Derry who won the All-Ireland Féile Peil na nÓg Division 1 with a 2-06 to 2-03 victory over Dublin’s Raheny at the newly refurbished Páirc Seán MacDiarmada in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday, July 1st. The Division 2 title went to Clane of Kildare, who recorded a thrilling 1-08 to 2-04 victory over Roscommon’s Padraig Pearses after extra time. St Rynagh’s of Offaly beat Antrim’s Sean Stinsons to land the Division 3 title and Éire Óg from Greystones in Wicklow overcame Clonmel Commercials from Tipperary in the Division 4 final. Lancashire, Drumreilly (Leitrim) and Strokestown (Roscommon) won the Division 5, 6 and 7 titles respectively.

In the girls Division 1 final, Southern Gaels of Kerry overcame Dublin’s Ballyboden St Enda’s by 0-06 to 0-02. In Div 2, Portlaoise beat Cill Íseal of Tyrone by 4-06 to 0-02. Shemaliers of Wexford won the Division 3 title and Kilnawley of Fermanagh won Division 4.

Shane Durkin from the Rockland County, New York GAA club, really enjoyed his time at the Féile. His New York team were beaten by eventual Div 2 winners Clane but won their other two games. He loved the intensity of the games and the chance to play in such competitive games. His dad, also Shane, played for Sligo in the 80s and his favourite player is Sligo's All-Star Eamon O'Hara. He predicts Cork to win the All-Ireland football final in 2007.

Rachel Conroy (right) and Gráinne Brothwood were stars on the Portlaoise team that won the Girls Div 2 finals. Their highlights were the qualifying win over St Rynagh’s of Offaly and the disco on Saturday night. Both want to line out for the Laois ladies and maybe one day win another All-Ireland with their native county. Gráinne reckons the Dubs are good enough to win the All-Ireland football final.

Rossa win the day!
Féile Peil na nÓg Div 1 Boys Final
O’Donovan Rossa (Derry) 2-06
Raheny (Dublin) 2-03

The clash of the titans saw Ulster’s and Leinster’s top teams play each other in a thrilling hard fought final. In their semi-final, O’Donovan Rossa had overcome Barna of Galway by 2-04 to 0-03, while Raheny had made it through with a great 6-03 to 1-01 win over Kilcummin of Kerry. Raheny fought til the end but they did not have enough in the tank to defeat the Derry side for whom the dimunitive Niall Higgins produced a match winning performance with two goals and two points. Raheny opened the scoring with a point but were rocked by two Rossa goals scored by their lethal corner-forward Niall Higgins who could have had a hat-trick only for a brilliant save by Jack Dempsey. Raheny fought back to within a point by half-time thanks to a fine 20m point as well as a scrambled goal from John O'Sullivan.

Both defences were playing superbly and a trading of points saw the scores level at 2-03 apiece with a few minutes remaining. It was down to the wire and once again it was "wee" Niall who scored the next two points that saw O'Donovan Rossa home. Anton McElhone added the final score. Rutherson Real for Raheny had been outstanding in defence and will be one to watch for the future. Well done to the Derry boys and better luck next time for Raheny.

Rossa celebrate like champions!

Gallant Gaels!
Féile Peil na nÓg Div 1 Girls Final
Southern Gaels (Kerry) 0-06
Ballyboden St Endas (Dublin) 0-02

The Division 1 final between Ballyboden St Endas and Kerry’s Southern Gaels was a bridge too far for the Boden girls who despite a battling performance and the loss of their star Michelle O’Reilly went down 0-06 to 0-02. The Kerry side from the Iveragh Peninsula in South Kerry won their 4th Féile title in 8 years. They dominated throughout the field and would have won by more only for the heroic efforts of Alice Gillen, the Boden goalkeeper. Laura O'Sullivan starred for the Kingdom girls whilst Ciara Ruddy and Claire King gave their all for Ballyboden. Well done to the girls from the Kingdom.
