Kerry people like to win All-Irelands. So the fact that their ladies haven’t been back to the promised land in over a decade is beginning to cause them series consternation. Their most prized asset Geraldine O’Shea is keener than ever to help get Kerry back to the top.

O’Shea was the main engineer in leading her county to the Munster Championship title with a 12-point haul in their narrow victory over Cork in the semi-final.
However, Dublin ended their dream in the All-Ireland semi-final but with O’Shea playing the best football ever from the edge of the square, expect to see them back next year competing for the top honour.

What have been the greatest moments in your career so far?

Beating Laois in the All-Ireland in 1993, and then winning the Munster championship this year when we beat Waterford. Also, representing Ireland in soccer was brilliant.

Who was your toughest opponent?
Helena Lohan, the Mayo full-back and captain.

What advice would you give to young players?
Always listen to your coaches, it is important to take their advice on board. But most importantly you must enjoy the game.

Who was your childhood hero?
In soccer, Ryan Giggs. In Gaelic Games, Peter Canavan and Maurice Fitzgerald, while in Ladies football Mary-Joe Curran from Kerry.

How did you balance playing soccer and football?
It was very difficult because the international team training was based in Dublin so I was missing a lot of Gaelic matches. I quit because I want to win another All-Ireland with Kerry.

What is the future like for Ladies football in the Kingdom?

It is very bright! We are making a massive effort to win the All-Ireland. We have a great college team, Colaiste na Sceilge, so there is a lot of young players coming through.
