Kate Leahy is one of the stars of Ladies Gaelic football and she pulls the strings at midfield for Kildare. In 2004 she helped her county to the All-Ireland Junior Championship title, beating a gallant Sligo in the final. Kate was instrumental as the Lillywhites overcame Wexford in the Leinster final before beating a tough Armagh side in the semi-final en-route to the Croker showdown. It was her third All-Ireland final in four years and after the disappointment of losing out in 2001 and 2003, something that she is dead proud of.
Kate is looking forward to a great League run in what is the Lillywhite’s first time in Division 1. With the Ladies game booming in Kildare at the moment it looks like 2005 will be another great year for all involved.
What has been your greatest moment in Gaelic football?
When we won the Junior All-Ireland in 2004. We had tried so hard because we knew what it felt like to lose one, so it was the best feeling because we were so focused - we knew we had to do it this time so we worked really hard.
Who was your toughest opponent?
I would have to say my sister, Brianne (who also plays for Grangenovlan and captains Kildare).
Which players do you admire?
Fiona Blessington from Longford. Also the Dublin ladies footballers.
Who was your childhood hero?
Kerry's Seamus Moynihan.
What advice for young girls playing the game?
Enjoy it, because there's no point otherwise. Train hard, keep going and put in the effort, and most importantly, do it as a team.
Do you find it difficult to balance your studies and football?
Yes it is very hard. Football is a job in itself - when you train four nights a week with club and county, followed by a match at weekends, on top of making deadlines for college.
