Galway’s midfield maestro, Edel Concannon, wants to get her hands on some silverware this summer. And we’re not just talking about Connacht, she wants to go all the way and get her hands on the biggest prize in ladies football, the Brendan Martin Cup.
They lost out to a revitalised Mayo side in this year’s National League final but have shown fantastic form along the way with stunning displays against Laois and Mayo, who they beat by 1-18 to 1-7 in an earlier round. With a nice mix of youth and experience and top players like Niamh Fahey, Sarah Cosgrove, Ann Marie McDonagh and Annette Clarke all at their peak, they will put it up to any side.
Edel was part of the All-Ireland winning side of 2004 and the following year she was on the losing side as they went down to the new superpower in Ladies football, Cork. Having experienced the highs and lows in the maroon and white, Edel will be taking each game as it comes. With a brilliant squad around her under the watchful eye of coach, Kevin Walsh, anything is possible for these tenacious Tribeswomen.
What has been your greatest moment in sport?
Scoring the goal in the 2004 All-Ireland final against Dublin. I came on as a sub that day and scoring that vital goal was very special for me and I will never forget it.
Which is the toughest team you have ever faced?
Cork in the 2005 All-Ireland final were awesome. But Cork are always very good and they will be the team to beat again this year.
Who was the toughest opponent you ever played against?
It has to be Nuala O’Shea from Mayo
Which player do you admire the most?
Mayo’s Cora Staunton. Nine times out of ten she will either get a score or a free - she never wastes a ball.
Who was your childhood sporting hero?
Kevin Walsh played with Galway when they won the All-Irelands back in 1998 and 2001. He was a big hero of mine and the funny thing is, he now coaches the Galway Ladies football team.
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Tuam-Cortoon and our biggest rivals are definitely Milltown.
What are your hopes for the future?
To go on and win an another All-Ireland Senior title would be our dream. Getting to the League final has given us the confidence to really go for it in the 2007 Championship.
What’s the most important skill in your opinion?
I suppose it’s not a skill but I think that workrate is so important. Every player should give 110% and never give up until the final whistle.
What advice would you give to young players?
Play because you want to play. Enjoy the game and take every opportunity that comes your way.
