The year 2004 was a huge one for Annette Clarke as she captained the Galway ladies to their first All-Ireland football title with a hard fought victory over a highly rated Dublin team. It was a fantastic achievement for a side that had only joined
the senior ranks in 2003. Now that the dust has settled and the celebrations are over, Annette is adamant that they won’t be giving up their title without a fight.
With Annette at midfield, the Tribeswomen have been playing some great
football this year.

They reached the National League final only to lose out to an ever-improving Cork side and they carried their good form into the Championship with a mighty win over Kerry at the quarter-final stage with a scoreline of 4-12 to 2-10. The Kilkerrin/Clonberne star played a blinder that day, controlling the midfield and scoring a stunning goal in the first half.

The Garda, based in Millstreet in Galway knows her duty; to lead the girls in maroon and white to another All-Ireland title. You can tell she is up for the challenge.

What was your greatest moment in sport?
Without doubt, lifting the cup as captain of Galway when we won the All-Ireland in 2004.

Who is the toughest team you have faced?
Cork, they beat us well in the National League final this year.

Who was your toughest opponent?
Lisa Cohill who plays for Gráinne Mhaols in Galway.

How do you balance your job and football?

I work different shifts and thankfully my workmates are very understanding and are always accommodating.

Which player do you admire the most?
I think Maurice Fitzgerald is great.

Who was your childhood sporting hero?
Sonia O’Sullivan.

Who are your biggest rivals?
At county level, it would have to be Mayo. We have played them many times and of course, they are our neighbours.

Do you play any other sports?
I played soccer when I was in college.

What are your hopes for the future?

Play to the best of my abilities and retain our All-Ireland title.

What advice do you give young players?
Work very hard and enjoy yourself.
