Wexford’s versatile playmaker, Eoin Quigley, is really looking forward to the Yella Bellies’ quest for All-Ireland glory this summer. In outstanding form over the last few years, he scored a vital goal against Galway to get Wexford to the knockout stages of the NHL for the first time since 1996. This was a real bonus to the squad and has given them great preparation for the long hot summer of Championship action.
For the last two years, Wexford have been beaten at the Leinster final stage to the team of the decade, Kilkenny. It has been hard to pick themselves up after such defeats but after a promising league campaign under their belts the spark is back, “We’re coming along nicely and we are building a nice squad” say Eoin.
Under Corkman John Meyler’s new management they have started to hurl again and have a new hunger for the game. With Eoin playing some of the best hurling of his career, he is fully focused and would like nothing better than to re-live the glory days when they last won Liam back in 1996. With a little bit of luck they could be dancing at the crossroads again come September.
What has been your greatest moment in sport?
Winning the 2004 Leinster title is a really great memory for me. We beat Kilkenny in the semi-final with a dramatic last minute goal which was a great buzz. We then went on to beat Offaly in the final. Happy days.
Which is the toughest team you have ever faced?
Kilkenny are always tough, whatever competition you meet them in.
Who was the toughest opponent you ever played against?
Derek Lyng who plays midfield for Kilkenny
Which players do you admire the most?
Ronan Curran of Cork and Kilkenny’s Eddie Brennan.
Who was your childhood sporting hero?
George O’Connor from Wexford - he was the best player I’ve seen to catch a ball in the air.
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for St Martins and our biggest rivals are Oulart the Ballagh. They beat us in the county final in 2005 and in the semi-final in 2006, so we know them only too well.
Do you play any other sports?
I play Gaelic football, soccer, golf and snooker.
Do you have any superstitions?
I always put my head down for a while before a game to get my thoughts together.
What are your hopes for the future?
To get another Leinster title and maybe go on and win an All-Ireland or NHL title. Overall, to work hard for Wexford hurling and to become a strong team again competing for the top honours.
What do you think is the most important skill in today’s game?
First touch is crucial and being able to catch the ball under pressure.
What advice would you give to young players?
Hurling’s a great game, so I would advise young players to first and foremost enjoy playing it.
