Kilkenny corner-back Michael Kavanagh has won every honour in the game and he played in his 9th All-Ireland final last week, and amazingly, he's still only 29!
He has won 5/6 Celtic Crosses, 4 National Leagues and an incredible 10 Leinster Championship medals. The Cats coasted through Leinster this year and came up against their old enemy Cork in the semi-final, but Kilkenny had their measure and set up a final against Waterford. An excellent man-marker, Kavanagh and his fellow Cats' backs are experts at shutting out opposition full-forward lines.

Kilkenny have an incredible recent record in All-Ireland finals - how do the Cats keep coming back so driven, focused and hungry for more every year?
A lot of that is down to our manager Brian Cody, who keeps things fresh by chopping and changing around on the panel. New lads come in and you know you are fighting for your place in training all the time. From the start of the season, all you want to be doing is playing in the Championship, so it keeps you on your toes, and if you pick up an injury, there is another lad who will get into the team and it's up to you to win your place back. Also, as a panel, we get on very well off the field, there's a great camaraderie within the panel. And you want to be on the team because there is no better feeling than winning an All-Ireland and you want to be part of it.

You play at corner-back and have marked some of the top forwards in the country. Who would be the toughest?
Our own forwards in training would be top-class - you could be marking Henry
Shefflin, Martin Comerford or Eddie Brennan - and you know that if you can do a good job on them, you will have a chance with any forward so it's great practice.

What is the toughest team you have come up against?
In the last few years it would have to be Cork. We had a massive semi-final against them this year and we've had some great battles in the last few years with them.

Who were your heroes growing up?
I would have been watching Kilkenny when I was growing up, so DJ Carey, John Power, Pat O'Neill and Willie O'Connor would have been my heroes, and I was lucky enough to get to play with some of them for Kilkenny.

Who are the players you admire now?
Within Kilkenny, it would be Henry Shefflin, Tommy Walsh, JJ Delaney and Cha
Fitzpatrick. Outside of Kilkenny, I admire Tipperary's Eoin Kelly and Galway's JoeCanning.

What is the most important skill?
Your first touch, because at inter-county level you don't get a second chance. When your first touch is right, it gives you confidence so it's important to practise it as often as you can, even if it just means getting your hurl and training against the wall

What advice would you have for young players?
Practise as often as you can, there is always something that can be worked on, even if it's just a few minutes a day, work on the weaker aspects of your game.
