Waterford’s lethal forward Paul Flynn will be a vitalcog in Waterford’s questfor All-Ireland glory this summer. Throughout the National Hurling League campaign he terrorised defences up and down the country, scoring an amazing 1-11 against Tipperary in the super six stage of the Deise’s campaign. But, tragically for them, last year’s runners-up in Munster fell at the final hurdle to an impressive Galway side in the League final in Limerick.
The April Vodafone Player of the Month is hoping for better fortune in the Championship this year. He is aiming to regain the Munster title from Cork and march on for that elusive All- Ireland title.
What was your hottest hurling moment?
Beating Tipp in the ’98 Munster semi-final ranks up there as the best. It was our first big scalp in the Munster championship and I scored 10 points on the day.
Which other player do you admire most at the moment?
Galway’s Eugene Cloonan and John Carroll from Tipp.
Any tough teams or players out there?
I can’t single out any one team or player as all of them are tough at this grade.
Who was your childhood hero?
John Fenton of Cork.
Got any superstitions?
I always try to be last out onto the pitch.
What do you regard as your best score?
The 21 yard free against Clare in the ’98 Munster final to square the game, that was some buzz!
Which club do you play for in Waterford and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Ballygunner, a club based just outside Waterford City and our main rivals are Mount Sion who have star players like Tony Browne and Eoin Kelly.
What advice would you give to young players?
Practice the basic skills of the game as often as possible.
What are your hopes for the future?
Getting to the National League final was brilliant but everyone down here wants to add another Munster title and then go on and lift the McCarthy Cup.
Do you play any other sports?
Golf.
