DJ Carey is already rated as one of the greatest hurlers ever, and he’s still very much on top of his game. He joined the Kilkenny senior team way back in 1988 and since then has won every honour in hurling.
Incredibly, DJ has now won nine All Star awards and looks to win a few more before his career ends. But his amazing skills aren‚t just limited to hurling, as he has also won 21 All-Ireland handball titles in various grades.
For the 2003 championship DJ Carey will again be the most feared forward in
the country, and is sure to cause defenders many sleepless nights for the rest
of the summer.
What are your hopes for this year?
Kilkenny are definitely setting out to win an All-Ireland again, and hopefully I can help them in a big way. But we’d be hopeful more than confident because every team will be gunning to beat us and we know it will be very difficult.
What was your greatest hurling moment?
Well thankfully I’ve had many, but one thing that does stand out for me was winning the Kilkenny county club championship in 1996 with Young Irelands, because that for me was a great honour.
Who is the toughest team or player you have ever been up against?
We’ve met Offaly so often during the last few years, and they are always tough. It’s always nip and tuck as to who would win or lose there. But every game you play you are facing great players, so it’s hard to pick out any individual.
Who was your childhood hero?
That would have to be Ger Henderson, who won several All-Irelands with Kilkenny and was one of the truly great players.
What advice do you give to young hurlers?
The basic skills of the game are the most important, and you should never forget that. And no matter how good you are you can never practice enough. I also played a lot of handball and it’s a game that is a marvellous addition to any aspiring young hurler and would give them a huge advantage.
