Sligo midfielder, Eamon O’Hara, is one of the modern games most established footballers. He first took to the field for his beloved Sligo in 1994 at the age of 19. Ever since, Eamon has worked hard and finally achieved his dream of winning a Connacht Senior Football medal in 2007. This was Sligo’s most successful phase in Gaelic football since 2002 when they lost out to that year’s winners Armagh at the quarter-final stage. Eamon gave a stunning display in this year’s Connacht Championship and the icing on the cake was his super goal against Galway in the final, it will be an inspiration to all young players. Sligo went on from there to progress to the quarter-final stages of the All-Ireland series but were beaten by eventual All-Ireland finalists Cork.
Eamon has achieved many personal successes on the football field and was part of the International Rules squad in 2001, 2002 and 2005. He is one of the few players in Ireland to actually be part of an International Rules winning team against Australia in 2001. Eamon has represented the Yeats County at all levels, including Minor, U-21 and Senior and in 2002 he won an All-Star Award in the coveted midfield position.
What has been your greatest moment in sport?
Receiving an All-Star Award was a great personal achievement for me. As a team, our greatest achievement has been winning the Connacht title this year.
Which is the toughest team that you have faced?
Armagh are probably the toughest team that anyone could face. We played them twice in the 2002 Championship and both matches were very tough to play in. They went on to win the All-Ireland that year.
Who has been your toughest opponent?
Armagh’s Paul McGrane is probably the toughest player that I have ever marked.
How do you balance work with playing football?
It can be incredibly difficult to balance both. I just have to make sure that I manage my time carefully. When the football season is on I get up at 7am and normally won’t get home until 10pm. All other things such as having a social life have to be forgotten about when you play football.
Which player do you admire most?
I admire Kevin Cassidy from Donegal and also, Mayo’s Pat Harte.
Who was your childhood sporting hero?
Jack O’Shea was always my Gaelic games hero and I also admired Chicago Bull’s basketball player Michael Jordan.
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Tourlestrane and our biggest rivals would be Curry. They won the county final this year so they are on top at the moment.
Did you enjoy playing International Rules?
I loved playing International Rules and I would love to see the game continue. However there would definitely need to be stricter refereeing. Do you play any other sports?
I like all sports, especially adventure sports. I like surfing, skiing and playing pool with the lads.
What advice would you give to young players?
I would encourage all young players to be honest with themselves and never let opportunities pass you by.
What would be your hopes for the future?
Last year was pretty good for us. It would be great to win another Connacht title and progress a bit further in the Championship next year.
