Mayo are back in Croker for another All-Ireland final and will be looking to avenge the bitter disappointment of defeat two years ago at the hands of Kerry. The signs are good for the men in green and red this year. Not least, they have the Championship’s top scorer Conor Mortimer among their ranks. With 1-33 to his name so far, he is the country’s most dangerous forward and has the skills to bring the Sam Maguire west to Mayo for the first time in 55 years.

To achieve that would be a dream come true for the Shrule-Glencorrib sharpshooter. There’s a belief in Mayo this year that the dream could become a reality with the U-21 footballers’ All-Ireland triumph in May lifting the squad morale and bringing a new-found belief to the county. Mortimer chipped in with five points in last month’s amazing semi-final comeback against the Dubs and if he can repeat that day’s performance, it might just be Mayo’s year.

What has been your greatest moment in sport?
Reaching the All-Ireland final against Kerry in 2004. It was a great occasion to play in front of such a large crowd in Croke Park but sadly for us it wasn’t to be our day. The Kingdom were one of the best sides around at the time and proved it.

Who are the toughest team you have ever faced?
I’d have to say Tyrone.

Who is the toughest opponent out there?
They are all tough to play against but if I was to single one out it would have to be Tyrone’s Ryan McMenamin. He is a very tight tenacious marker and so hard to get scores off.

How do you balance your studies and football?
I’m a student at DCU in Dublin and it’s a great college for sport. The facilities are very good there and it’s easy to keep yourself in shape and also study.

Which player do you admire the most?
Another Tyrone man, Peter Canavan.

Who was your childhood hero?
I always looked up to my two older brothers Trevor and Kenneth.

What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play with Shrule-Glencorrib at Intermediate level and our biggest rivals would be Kilmaine.

Do you play any other sports?
I like to play soccer from time to time.

What are your hopes for the future?
I would love to go on and win an All-Ireland with this Mayo team. There is a great team spirit this year and it would be a great feeling to head west to Mayo with the Sam Maguire Cup.

What advice would you give to young players?
Always stay positive and keep training.
