Ace marksman, Steven McDonnell, chipped in with 10 points to help Armagh to the National Football League title in May, while in the Championship, his scoring skills powered the Orchard County to their fifth Ulster crown in seven years.

The Killeavy clubman and his side saw off the challenges of Fermanagh, Donegal and Derry in the Ulster Championship to set up a final against old rivals Tyrone. The teams travelled to Croke Park for the clash but just as the Red Hands looked like they might take the honours, Steven put over a point to earn his men a second bite of the cherry. In the rematch, Steve scored three points as Armagh won the fiery encounter.

However, Tyrone had their revenge
in the All-Ireland semi-final, when a last-gasp winner by Peter Canavan put paid to Armagh's dream of an All-Ireland final match-up against Kerry.

Armagh won the National League and the Ulster Championship but lost out in the All-Ireland semi-final. How do you rate the season?
It was disappointing to lose out to Tyrone in the semi-final. When we started out at the beginning of the year we had only one thing in mind and that was to get to the All-Ireland final. It was nice to win two trophies, but we would have swapped both for the Sam Maguire, because that was the one we wanted most.

Which was the toughest match you've played in?
The drawn Ulster final against Tyrone was the toughest match. They outplayed us for most of that game so we were chasing the match a lot of the time. The semi-final was also tough because we felt we had played better but they just pipped us by a point in the end.

Who was your toughest opponent?
I would have to say Tyrone's Ryan McMenamin. This year, we had some good battles and in the semi-final I would say it was 50/50 between us.

Who were your childhood heroes?

When I was young, Kerry would have been the big team and I really admired Jack O'Shea. In Armagh, I would have looked up to Gerard Houlihan and Neil Smyth, and as I got older it would have been Kieran McGeeney.

Have you any advice for young players?
I would say listen to your managers. Listen to the advice they give along the way and maybe it will help you to win an All-Ireland one day!

What are your hopes for the future?
First of all, I hope most of the team stay on for next season. Then I hope we can go one better by getting to the final and winning it.
