If Crossmaglen Rangers claim their 5th All-Ireland Club title on St Patrick’s Day they will surely further cement their place as the greatest club side of all time. In Armagh they are simply untouchable and in Ulster they have won 7 Provincial titles since 1996. One man who has been there all along is Armagh centre-forward John McEntee. The man who always seems to have time on the ball will hope to bring his vast experience to Croke Park on club final day. His left foot has orchestrated the Armagh kingpin’s attack throughout their amazing success and he will relish the chance to add another medal to his already impressive haul.

How do Crossmaglen keep going year after year?
We’ve been lucky enough to have a good crop of players coming through at the same time. You can’t do these kind of things without the players there. Even when we have lost one or two players, there has always been younger lads coming up. It’s a case of always having young players coming on, success breeding success.

What has been your greatest moment in sport?
It would have to be winning the All-Ireland with Armagh in 2002.

Which is the toughest team you have faced?
Probably Errigal Ciaran’s from Tyrone. We have played them in the Ulster Club Championship four times and we have drawn two and lost two. We get it very hard against them.

Who was your toughest ever opponent?
It’s hard to know but Glenn Ryan from Kildare was very good. He was just a good ball player who could read the game and mark space as well as managing to mark you at the same time.

Which players do you admire the most?
You have to admire the Gooch. He has fantastic talent and he is very brave going in for every ball no matter what. He is just an all-round footballer.

Who was your childhood sporting hero?
I used to always love the Meath team around the early 90s. You had players like Colm O’Rourke and David Beggy. I especially loved O’Rourke, he was a great player.

What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Crossmaglen Rangers. As for rivals we have played Ballinderry from Derry a good bit in the last few years and it is always very tough.

Do you have any superstitions?
I used to have but not anymore. I’ve grown out of all that. Although I tend never to cut my hair coming up to a game.

How do you balance your job and football?
I work in a 9-5 job that doesn’t involve evening or weekend work so it’s not an issue. If needs be I just take some of my annual leave.

What’s the most important skill in your opinion?
One of them is to be able to read the game and not to panic on the ball. The ability to make the right decision on the ball is very important.

What advice would you give to young players coming through the ranks?
You should practise the skills of the game as much as you can. Learn to play the game properly before you start worrying about fitness. That can be worked on in six months, but the skill and tactical side of the game takes time to learn.
