Since making his Championship debut back in 2005, James Masters has been a mainstay in the Cork attack. His fantastic free-taking and his ability to take scores from the tightest of angles has made him a firm favourite with the fans. Cork have been at the business end of the Championship over the last few years, but since Conor Counihan took over in 2008 they have been red hot. Earlier in the year they collected some silverware when defeating Monaghan to win the NFL Div 2 title, “Even though Sam is what it’s all about, winning that was a real morale booster,” says James. He added a 3rd Munster Senior medal to his collection in June when beating Kerry in a replay, it was James’ 12th time to line out against The Kingdom in the Championship. Wins against Donegal and Tyrone followed and who would have thought that they would have to meet Kerry again in the All-Ireland final, a re-match of the 2007 decider. The Rebels will only be happy with one outcome, to get their hands on Sam and who knows?, it could be 13th time lucky for Masters!
It’s been a great year for Cork football, winning the U-21 title and reaching another All-Ireland football final. What has been the highlight for you?
The highlight for me, without a doubt, was beating Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final. We played some good football that day and we kept it going for the full 70 minutes against one of the best teams around.
What has been your greatest moment in GAA?
Winning the All-Ireland Club Championship back in 2003 with Nemo Rangers, would be my greatest moment and winning the All-Ireland final with the Cork Minors would rank up there too.
Which teams are the toughest to play against?
On the inter-county stage, Kerry are always a hard team to beat. On the club front, it has to be Clonakilty.
Who has been your toughest opponent?
Aghada's Kieran O'Connor would be the toughest defender I have come up against.
Who were your childhood heroes and who are the players you admire now?
Colin Corkery was my hero growing up - he played for Nemo and for Cork. There are a lot of good players around at the moment but Stephen O'Neill from Tyrone stands out. He is a great scoretaker and he has shown a lot of guts to come back from injury this season.
Do you play any other sports?
I play a bit of golf and some hurling from time to time.
What is the most important skill?
Being able to get the ball under control fast is the most important skill for a young footballer. It gives you that extra bit of time on the ball to look up and pick out a player.
What advice would you give to young footballers learning the game?
You hear this all the time, but practise the main skills and work on both feet at all times.
What are your hopes for the future?
My hopes for this year are to go on and win the All-Ireland with The Rebels, and then to return to the club scene and try to win another All-Ireland Club title.
