It’s been an eventful year for Dr Croke’s star, Eoin Brosnan. Just six months after playing in an All-Ireland final with Kerry against Mayo, he is back in Croker, this time to battle for The Andy Merrigan Cup against the Orchard County’s finest, Crossmaglen Rangers.
Even though they lost out to South Kerry in the Kerry County final, they qualified to represent the county in the Munster Club Championship because South Kerry are a divisional side and not a club. They made up for it with super wins over Cork’s Nemo Rangers and The Nire from Waterford in the Munster Club final in Páirc Uí Chaoímh. At the semi-final stage they drew with Moorefield at the first attempt but in the reply they put on a powerhouse performance in Nenagh to dispose of the Kildare champions in a scoreline of 2-09 to 0-08. Eoin was outstanding on the day and scored a wonder goal in the second half to put the game beyond reach for the Lillywhites.
“Losing the county final was a bitter disappointment” says Eoin, but with teammates like Colm Cooper, Ambrose O'Donovan and Kieran O'Leary all playing out of their skins, there’s a good chance that they could erase those memories on St Patrick’s Day.
Dr Crokes have had a great run to reach the All-Ireland Club final. What were the toughest matches?
We played Nemo Rangers in Cork and that was a tough game. We were the underdogs but we came out on top in the end. It was a great achievement for us after losing the county final to South Kerry.
It’s been a great twelve months. What were the highlights for you?
Winning the All-Ireland was great but winning the Munster Club title was the icing on the cake. After the disappointment of the county final it was a real boost.
Who are the toughest teams?
The best team I ever came up against was Tyrone in the 2005 All-Ireland final.
They were outstanding - really fast and ultra fit.
Who was the toughest player you have played against?
Nicholas Murphy of Cork
Which players do you admire the most?
It would have to be our very own Seamus Moynihan.
Who was your childhood hero?
Maurice Fitzgerald and Jack O’Shea
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Dr. Crokes and our biggest rivals are South Kerry. They are a divisional side and have won the last two county titles.
What’s the most important skill in your opinion?
Being able to kick the ball with both feet is really important and a great asset to have. It takes a lot of practise, but it’s worth it in the end. Colm Cooper and Stephen O’Neill are great examples.
What advice would you give to young players?
In your own time, practise catching and kicking the ball against a wall at home. It’s great for ball control.
What are your hopes for the future?
We will be trying our hardest to become All-Ireland Club champions and, of course, to try and win more titles with The Kingdom.
