For Trish Jackman it is a hectic schedule and 2009 has been no different. When she wasn’t studying for her Leaving Cert or preparing for life as a University of Limerick student, she has been playing a starring role for the Waterford Minor and Junior camogie teams up and down the country. Add in her duties for her Club Gall Tír and her first Poc Fada title that she won in August, she has hardly time to draw her breath.
Camogie is on the rise in Waterford and Trish is playing her part. Even though she lost out in the Minor final against Limerick, the girls regrouped and powered their way to the All-Ireland Junior final for a showdown with Offaly. It’s end to end stuff for the versatile Trish, as a goalie she tried to stop goals in 2008 but this year she is at the other end trying to score them in the forwards. With Trish in flying form and an amazing and dedicated group of player around her, this is one team to watch!
It’s been a great year for Waterford camogie in both Minor and Junior. It must be great to be part of such a great bunch of players?
It’s been a fantastic year for all county teams in Waterford. We were very unfortunate to lose both the Minor final against Limerick and the U-16 final against Wexford earlier in the year. The U-14 Development squad are going well too.
What has been your greatest moment in sport?
Winning 2 Senior County titles with my club was special but I think winning the Munster Schools Championship with Mercy Convent Waterford this year was amazing.
Which is the toughest team you have faced?
The Cork Senior team, they have All-Stars in almost every position.
Who was your toughest ever opponent?
Elaine Aylward of Kilkenny.
Which players do you admire the most?
My favourite players would be Niamh Mulcahy of Limerick and Niamh Rockett who is an up-and-coming talent in my own county. In GAA I admire the Ó Sé brothers and Declan O’Sullivan from Kerry.
Who was your childhood sporting hero?
I would have loved watching Fergal Hartley when I was growing up. He was captain of the Waterford team when the Munster Cup was brought back to Waterford in 2002 for the first time in 39 years.
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Gall Tír and our biggest rivals would be St Annes and Lismore.
We won the County Championship in 2008; it was the 50th year of the club so there were big celebrations when we won it.
Do you have any superstitions?
I spin my hurley in my hands before I step up to a free or sideline cut. John Gardiner was the first player I saw doing it and I guess I just got into the habit of doing it!
What’s the most important skill in your opinion?
Controlling the ball with your first touch and being able to catch the ball are the most important skills in my opinion as they give you an extra split second over your opponent.
What advice would you give to young players coming through the ranks?
Practise your skills as much as you can. All anyone needs to improve is a hurley, a sliotar and a wall. It’s the extra work that you put in away from your club training sessions which will make a big difference.
What are your hopes for the future?
I would love to play at Senior Level with Waterford. Before that happens we will have to win the Junior Championship so that would be the short-term goal for us.
