Shónagh Enright is a rising star on the inter-county camogie scene. Since bursting onto the panel this year, it has been an amazing time for the Kilmaley star.
2008 was the breakthrough year, not just for Shónagh, but also for her Banner team-mates. After defeat to Derry in 2007 when a late late Aisling Diamond goal broke their hearts, they finally captured the All-Ireland Junior Championship last September, beating Offaly. It was their 6th attempt at All-Ireland glory since meeting Galway in the 2003 decider. It was extra special for super-sub Shónagh who was brought on in the 40th minute and she scored the crucial goal in injury-time to win the day for Clare. It was cruel for Offaly but some quick hands from Shónagh meant that Clare were celebrating their 4th title and their first since 1986.
2009 sees Clare stepping up to play Senior camogie. "It will be tough going at the higher level but we are up for the challenge" says Shónagh. Having finally grabbed some silverware in 2008, their prospects at the highest level look bright. A player to watch for the future!
What is your greatest moment in sport?
My greatest moment in sport was winning the Junior title this year. It was great to finally win it but it was extra special for me as I got the winning goal at the end.
What is the toughest team you have come up against?
We played Laois in the Junior semi-final this year and they were very good. It took a lot of effort to beat then but it definitely set us up for the final against Offaly.
Who was the toughest opponent you ever played against?
There are a lot of tough players but Kilkenny’s Edwina Keane would be at the top of my list. They beat us in the Minor A final, completing a 3-in-a-row.
Which player do you admire the most?
My county team-mate, Laura Linnane, is a fantastic player. She is one of the most dedicated players I know and she is supportive, funny and raises the spirit of the team.
Do you play any other sports?
Football and soccer when I have the time.
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Kilmaley and our biggest rivals on the club scene would be Newmarket-on-Fergus. We played them in the Senor final this year and we got the better of them.
What is the most important skill?
I think soloing is very important. It is one of the great skills of the game and it keeps the game moving fast. There is nothing better then bursting through a defence with the ball on the end of the stick.
What advice would you have for young players?
Keep practising - as they say, practise makes perfect!
What are your hopes for the future?
It’s been a fantastic year for us and I hope we can build on it for the future. More Junior and Minor All-Irelands would do nicely thank you very much.
