Catherine O’Loughlin’s greatest moment in Gaelic games came when she was picked on the 2005 All-Star Camogie team. Not only was she one of the few players from outside Cork and Tipperary on the team, but she was also the first Clare player ever to be honoured with an All-Star Award.

Leading the Banner attack, she helped Clare to their second All-Ireland Junior final in three years. Back in 2003 they lost to Galway in a replay and in 2005, history repeated itself, when they had to go to a replay against a resolute Dublin side last September in Birr. In a close run game they lost out in a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-4.
Despite the disappointments of the last few years, Catherine is confident that with a good crop of young players coming through at under-age level, it wont be long before “The Banner” ladies are back in Croker fighting for silverware.

What has been your greatest moment in sport?
Winning Clare's first Camogie All-Star Award in 2005 was very special.
It made up for the heartache of losing the Junior final to Dublin.

Which is the toughest team you have ever faced?
Every team is tough these days but I would have to say that the Cork Senior team during the 90s were very strong and skillful.

Who was the toughest opponent you have ever faced?

It would have to be the Tipperary full back Una O'Dwyer, a fantastic player.

How do you balance your job and hurling?
It is difficult at times but I have a very understanding boss who allows me the time to
concentrate on camogie when I have to. That is a real bonus.

Which players do you admire the most?
Moire McMahon, who plays for our local arch-rivals Newmarket-on-fergus and Deirdre Murphy from the Davitt’s club in Galway.

Who was your childhood sporting hero?
DJ Carey

What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Kilnamona and our biggest rivals on the county scene are definitely Newmarket. We have had many great battles with them over the years. We contested the last two Senior finals, beating them in 2004 but they beat us last year to take the title.

Do you play any other sports?
I play some Gaelic football and soccer.

What are your hopes for the future?
To win the All-Ireland Junior this year would be brilliant but also to continue playing at the highest level. I also have great hopes for the Clare U-18's and I think this could be their year.

What advice would you give to young players?

Play at the highest level possible and always take advice.
