Athenry star Therese Maher believes that 2004 has been a positive year for the Galway camogie team. A stunning victory over a much fancied Kilkenny side set them up for a semi-final clash with Cork and even though the Rebels eventually booked their place in yet another All-Ireland final, Galway gave them a good game and showed that they are a team for the future.
Therese Maher had extra reason to be happy this year as she captained Ireland in the 1st International camogie match played before a large crowd at the International Rules test on the 17th October, “It’s an honour to play for your country and even better to get to play in Croke Park” Now you can’t get much better than that!
Your greatest sporting moment?
I won two Minor All-Irelands with Galway in 1996 and ’97. The ’97 victory was extra special for me as I was captain of the team which beat Cork, now that was my top sporting moment by a mile.
Who are the toughest teams?
Tipperary and Cork, they play camogie at another level.
Which players do you admire?
There are some great players around but I think that Sharon Glynn from Galway, Cork’s Fiona O’Driscoll and Kate Kelly from Wexford are fantastic exponents of the game. Watch out for young Jessica Gill and Noreen Coen from Galway, they will be big stars in the future I think.
Who were your childhood heroes?
We were all big fans of the great Galway hurlers in the 80’s.
What advice would you give to young players?
Practise the skills of the game, not just in training, but in your own time as well. It’s the extra work that you put in that counts. Also try to watch as many games as possible and learn from the stars
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Athenry and we are in our second year as a senior team. Davitt’s and Pearse’s would be the big players in the local club scene.
What are your hopes for the future?
I would love to win a County Championship and with Galway, I would give anything to win a Senior All-Ireland title. © December 2004 |
