Dublin camogie emerged from the doldrums last October as the Blues secured their first All-Ireland Junior title in 30 years. And it was versatile Ballyboden St. Enda’s ace, Ciara Lucey, who made the difference on the day, with four points and a ‘Player of the Match’ performance. “Beyond my wildest dreams,” is how she describes that achievement, and the All-Star award that was to follow.
Having already reached the National League Division 1B final with impressive wins against Cork, Tipperary, Wexford and the Cats, the focus will now turn to the defence of their All-Ireland crown. And while she admits it will be difficult to repeat the remarkable success of 2005, she is confident that Dublin have what it takes. Success would see Dublin promoted to the Senior Camogie Championship. Now that would truly be beyond Ciara’s wildest dreams.
What has been your greatest moment in sport?
2005 was a great year for me. Winning the Junior All-Ireland with Dublin and getting an All-Star Award were beyond my wildest dreams.
Who are the toughest teams you have faced?
The Cork Senior team are always very strong, but I suppose I’d have to say the matches against Clare in the 2005 All-Ireland were very tough, thankfully we beat them in the replay.
Who was the toughest opponent you have ever faced?
Ciara Gaynor from Tipperary. She’s very skillful, but also very tough.
How do you balance your studies and camogie?
I train with the club, the county and I also coach the U-12 Ballyboden St. Endas team so I really only have one night off. On top of that, college that can be fairly hectic sometimes, but I really love camogie, so it’s not a problem for me.
Which players do you admire the most?
In hurling, I think Brian Corcoran from Cork is great. In camogie, I really admire Deirdre Hughes from Tipperary. She’s very skillful and she’s the only player from the current game to be picked on the Centenary Year team.
Who was your childhood sporting hero?
Definitely DJ Carey for his skill and longevity in the game. But I’ve always admired siblings in sport like the Ó hAilpíns and the O’Connors, probably because I’ve always played alongside my sister Emer.
What club do you play for and who are your biggest rivals?
I play for Ballyboden St. Endas and our biggest rivals in Dublin would have to be St. Vincents.
Do you play any other sports?
I used to play football and badmington but now I give 100% to camogie.
Do you have any superstitions?
I always watch my favourite film Remember the Titans before a big match and of course, I always have to be fake-tanned for every match!
What are your hopes for the future?
My hopes for 2006 would be to win the County championship and get to a Leinster Final with Ballyboden St. Endas. With Dublin, I really hope we can retain our Junior title so we can be promoted to Senior Camogie for 2007. That is our goal. |
