Wexford Camogie is on the up and Mary Lacey is certainly playing her part. The versatile star, who can play at centre-forward and centre-back, made her debut for the Model county when she was only 14 and now at 18 she is captain of the team.
Winning is sure becoming a habit for the girl from the sunny south east. Having led Wexford to a Leinster Senior Championship in 2003 she went on to captain her school, Scoil Bride from Enniscorthy, to an All-Ireland College’s title for the second year in a row, beating the much fancied Charleville from Cork in a replay.
The Oulart the Ballagh star is not going to stop there and is looking forward to a great summer of top camogie action. After reaching this years National League final against Tipperary she has her sights set on the championship and maybe a trip to Croker some Sunday in September.
What was your coolest camogie moment?
Winning the county championship with my club Oulart the Ballagh in 2003 was my coolest camogie moment. That was a super occasion as we had come so close many times before and it was our first time to win it.
Which other player do you admire most at the moment?
Fiona Dunne, Liam Dunne’s sister.
Any tough teams out there?
We played Charleville in this years All-Ireland College’s final. They were strong all over the field and it took us two games to beat them.
Who were your chidlhood heros?
Liam Dunne and Martin Storey.
Got any superstitions?
It sounds silly but I always try to wear the same bandana when i’m playing.
What are your hopes for the future?
Getting to the National league final was brilliant but to win an All-Ireland would be a dream come true and we will give it a good shot this year.
